- Install and maintain at least one smoke alarm in your
home.
- Prepare a home escape plan and practise it. In the event of
fire, crawl low under smoke and call 000 from a neighbour’s
house.
- Make sure that doors and windows can be easily opened from the
inside. Keep keys readily available.
- Keep flammable items away from heaters and screen wood
fires.
- When cooking, never leave food (especially oil and fat)
unattended.
- Do not smoke in bed.
- Never leave burning candles unattended.
- Purchase a fire blanket or fire extinguisher. Know how and when
to use it.
- If your clothes catch fire remember to stop, drop, cover your
face and roll.
- All household electrical appliances should be used, installed
and maintained according to the manufacturers’ specifications.
- Clean chimneys and flues regularly.
- Ensure safety around use of 240 volt and extra low voltage
(less than 50 Volts) dichroic (halogen) down lights.
