Interstate News: Alarm saves family from house fire
Apr 15, 2011
BREAKING: FIREFIGHTERS say smoke alarms saved the lives of a Pialba family this morning after a blaze tore through their home.
About 11.40am a woman in her late 20s was out the back of her house when she heard the smoke alarm activate in the front bedroom, where two of her children were playing.
There were six people in the house at the time.
The woman grabbed her children and ran out onto the street, where they watched flames engulf the entire front section of the home.
A neighbour tried to extinguish the blaze with a garden hose but his efforts were in vain.
When emergency services arrived, fire had already gutted the front bedroom and was edging the back bedrooms.
It took firefighters only 10 minutes to contain the fire but by then the house had suffered significant damage.
The family will spend the night with friends.
