Interstate News: Baby's lucky escape from Glenroy house fire
Sep 10, 2010
A THREE-month-old baby boy suffered smoke inhalation and his family had a lucky escape after a house fire in Melbourne's north last night.
MFB crews were called to Anselm Grove, Glenroy, about 11.40pm.
An electrical fault is believed to have triggered the fire in the wall cavity of the house’s front bedroom.
The baby boy was asleep in the room when the fire started, causing smoke to penetrate through the wall.
His family was watching TV in the living room.
Firefighters gave the baby, who suffered minor smoke inhalation, oxygen until paramedics arrived.
Firefighter Marc Lardo, from Broadmeadows, said the house was not fitted with a smoke alarm.
"(There was) just smoke, small flames coming out through the front of the weatherboard house and sparking in the cavity,’’ he said.
"It was very lucky that the family was awake because if it was 2am they wouldn’t have been able to smell the smoke and who knows what would have happened to the baby.’’
Mr Lardo sid the family's escape was a timely reminder that only working smoke alarms can really help people escape house fires.
