Interstate News: Family escapes house fire
Dec 27, 2010
A young family had a lucky escape when their Melbourne house was damaged by fire early on Monday.
The mother was getting up to feed her baby when she could smell smoke just after midnight.
She woke her husband and after searching through their weatherboard house in Harborne Street, Macleod, he went outside to look underneath.
He saw some flames and quickly got everyone safely outside just as the fire burnt through the floor and rapidly filled the house with thick, acrid smoke.
The rear of the dwelling was nearly destroyed and the remainder was affected by heat, smoke and water, firefighters say.
The fire took a little over 30 minutes to bring under control and no injuries were reported.
Firefighters had to take additional precautions including the wearing of breathing apparatus as the roofing material contained asbestos.
The damage bill has been estimated at $150,000 and the cause is under investigation.
