Interstate News: Witta home destroyed by fire

Jul 9, 2010

A TWO-storey timber and metal home that took years to build has been burnt to the ground in the second Sunshine Coast hinterland blaze this week.

The fire disturbed the normally quiet rural neighbourhood of Witta, west of Maleny on Thursday night.

The newly-completed home, sitting on its acreage block overlooking a small lake, was described by a neighbour as a six-year “labour of love” by its owner.

All that was left on Friday morning was a mass of twisted metal roofing and brick house stumps.

Fire crews from Maleny and Kenilworth stations were alerted shortly before midnight by neighbours, who had noticed a small blaze and smoke.

Meanwhile, a man was saved from a house fire at Montville last night when a barking dog alerted him to the danger.
