Interstate news: Bail follows house fire allegation

Mar 2, 2011

A MAN who allegedly tried to burn his mother's house down has been granted bail in Hervey Bay Magistrates Court.

The accused was charged with breaching a domestic violence order, as he had previously been ordered not to go to his mother's Pialba home.

The court heard he threatened to burn down the house if not given cannabis and when none came, he poured milk and water into a toaster in a vain bid to start a fire.

The court heard the accused had consumed alcohol prior to the incident and did not remember it happening, but did not deny any of the facts put forward by the prosecution.

According to the mother of the accused, her son was “loving and loyal” but had a serious problem with drugs and alcohol and was subject to peer pressure and intimidation from “the wrong crowd of people”.

Magistrate Graeme Tatnell granted bail until the sentencing hearing but imposed very strict conditions including bi-weekly reports to the police station, testing for drugs and alcohol and mandatory attendance to the Fraser Coast Mental Health Service.
