Keep your smoke alarm in good order!
Apr 1, 2010
HOUSEHOLDERS are being reminded of the importance of their smoke alarms and to ensure they are thoroughly inspected.
Thursday is
National Smoke Alarm Day and the community is encouraged to check
they have hard-wired smoke alarms fitted, in full working order,
and new batteries fitted if required.
Mick Gibson, the director of The Smoke Alarm Company, a mobile service run from South Perth, said smoke alarms should be regularly serviced.
“We recommend calling in an expert for your annual smoke alarm maintenance check,” he said.
“The fire service is only likely to arrive at the scene of a fire, whereby a working smoke alarm can let you know of danger before a fire starts.”
Since October, it has been compulsory in WA for mains-powered smoke alarms to be fitted in all existing residential buildings prior to sale and also when a new tenancy agreement is signed for rental properties.
The new laws state that alarms must remain in full working order at all times.
