Smoke Alarm Law

ALL properties that are sold or rented in WA, will be required to have mains-powered smoke alarms installed, under new state laws that came into effect today.

Owners of all homes built before 1997 who do not have the mains-powered smoke alarms fitted will risk a $5000 fine.

New homes will also need to have the alarms installed.

Manager, Built Environment Branch, Terry Jackson, said the responsibility to have the alarms installed rested with the building owner.

“Investors are also affected, as they will need to have smoke alarms installed within two weeks of new tenancy agreements being signed,” he said.

“If no new agreement is signed then mains powered smoke alarms will need to be installed within two years.”
